Blocking in areas using acrylic washes is an exploratory process, aiming at establishing the best position of certain tones and colours. Layers of acylic paint are built up, sometimes aided by gel medium to create transparency, with several variations of colour overlaid. As colour selection is determined, areas are blocked in more carefully, with thicker paint and variations in tone added.
